Why, as a woman of faith, I am supporting the Biden/Harris ticket.
Usually I don't post about electoral politics...but now's not the time for silence.
I’ve never made an official political endorsement of any kind. And I know this is a tense time, a confusing time, an uneasy time in our country and we are so deeply divided.
I don’t see myself writing a great deal about the election, since there are more astute, and reliable voices than mine out there when it comes to politics. But a couple days ago, I was asked to Join Ashley Biden, author and activist Valarie Kaur, Rabbi Sharon Brous, Texas Democratic Party Vice Chair Dr. Carla Brailey, Michigan attorney Muna Jondy, Rev. Dr. Carolyn Davis, and Dr. Nichole Flores to speak on why as women of faith we are supporting the Biden/Harris campaign. I felt like I wanted to speak up. I do not intend to anger or alienate anyone. I am just saying what is mine to say.
Here’s some of my talk:
Why, as a woman of faith, I am supporting the Biden/Harris ticket
(there are many more reasons - these are just a few)
In the Hebrew Bible, God’s people were judged according to how they treated certain groups of people whose interests they were commanded to protect: not stock holders and property owners and the 1%, but the foreigner, widows and orphans.
So, as a woman of faith,
I must support a ticket that protects the weak, not mocks them.
I must support a ticket that protects the refugee, not incarcerates them.
I must support a ticket that protects women, not separates them from their babies at the border.
As a woman of faith I am supporting the Biden/Harris ticket because I want this country led by people who know that God is God and they are not. That know that God’s strength is perfected, not in our boasting, but in our weakness.
As a woman of faith I am supporting the Biden/Harris ticket because I believe that not only do Black Lives Matter, but that the most reliable narrators of what it is really like to be Black in this country are not Betsy Devos, Kellyanne Conway and Ivanka Trump, but Sybrina Fulton and Bree Newsome and Brittney Cooper.
As a woman of faith I am compelled to support the Biden/Harris ticket because Jesus preached that he had come to preach good news to the poor, and freedom to the prisoners, and liberation to the oppressed not the stripping of the social safety net and establishing for-profit prisons and justifying knees on the necks of Black men.
As a woman of faith I am supporting the Biden Harris ticket because I believe it is foundationally patriotic to do so. It is to say, I will hold this country’s feet to the fire until we finally resemble in reality what we have always claimed to be in theory. I will not abandon this country to those who would wrap their bigoted self-interest in the flag and call it “God’s will”.
As a woman of faith I am supporting the Biden/Harris ticket because of Joe’s aviator sunglasses and Kamala’s all-star high tops and because I believe they have the capacity for joy - a joy that the world didn’t give and the world can’t take away….and if we need anything, we need that right now.
